NIGHT GALLERY THEME (1st Season)
Composed by Gil Mellé
Producer Jack Laird (an apostle of the 1970s vogue in electronic
experimentation) hired avant-garde jazzman Gil Mellé to compose the theme for
the new television series. Preceded by Billy Goldenberg's brief Four-in-One
fanfare, Mellé's purely electronic main title for Night Gallery was a first
in television. Sketched out by the composer on the piano, Mellé recorded
this theme in his home studio playing all the instruments himself,
overdubbing track by track. The original composition lasted 50 seconds but
was edited by the Universal music department to 30 for time considerations.
